Pricing model changed, but that’s okay.
I’m docking one star because they changed pricing models. I hate subscription services myself, especially when they are introduced into a product I’ve already paid for. There were two ways they could have gone here… kept this product unchanged in which case it might or might not work with the next version of Mac OS (scheduled to come out soon). Maybe this next version was okay but one of the supported platforms makes an API change… and it dies due to that. Either way, we’re looking at a 1-3 year window.
The other way, and what they chose to do, was to give previous purchases a 3 year pro subscription. Based on their pricing that means for my original $30 not only did I get the time before the change but I also get three ~$60 year long pro subscriptions. Or at least I’m supposed to. Which means continued active development, new features I didn’t originally pay for, etc.
If you read their blog post you’ll see they were in a bind with piracy. Not an unusual situation but it’s one of the many reasons everything is moving to subscriptions these days, despite me not liking that very much.
